One year after the launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony have announced new availability in the Sony store. Since the release, PS5’s have been extremely hard to come by. Global chip shortages have forced the production of many goods including games consoles to slow.
This was compounded when local lockdowns began to effect shipping and transport. The limited supply of consoles has been targeted by scalpers and subsequently, prices have gone through the roof. However, on Tuesday 23rd November Sony announced exclusive invitations to PS4 players to purchase the next-gen console. This invitation was open from 8 am to 10 am Thursday 25th November or as long as stocks lasted.
This is a change of direction for Sony who have so far resisted directly selling in the UK market. Instead, this has seen PS5’s sold across various stockists in the UK including Argos, Amazon, Game, and Curry’s. This change benefits both the customer and Sony: direct listings reduce shipping time between manufacturer and retailer; shortening restocks for the customer, whilst the extra cost of using a stockist is removed ensuring lower prices.
Stock does not seem limited to only those with an invitation and should hopefully mark the end of the scalping and price increases. Sony will likely release another round so keep an eye on your emails or sign up for information about the next release.
